Give those students a little taste of home

Your nest is suddenly empty but the fridge is fuller than it's been in years. The teenager who ate you out of house and home went off to university last month. But the unaccustomed luxury of finding there is still food in your cupboards four days after you've shopped prompts most parents to fret rather than rejoice.

Are they eating properly - or at all? And do they realise that cereal, toast and Pot Noodles don't constitute a balanced diet? Your anxiety is shared by millions all trying to parent their student-teenagers via telephone and e-mail.

But after their daughter came to study at Sheffield University, parents Hugh and Jan Band came up with a novel idea to keep her fed and nurtured from afar. Having searched for a hamper company that didn't specialise in luxury items, they decided to start their own, packed to the brim with student-friendly ingredients.

'We had two daughters away at university and like all parents, we worried about them eating properly' said Jan. 'We decided we'd send a hamper - a reminder of home that also would ensure they were getting some decent food for a while. But the only ones we could find contained things like smoked salmon, not exactly student fodder'.

The couple, who own a marketing consultancy in Shropshire, sourced a range of food that their daughter would have enjoyed. But they ensured everything was also nutritious, additive-free and quick and easy to prepare.

Former Wath comprehensive pupil Chloe Fairman, now a drama student at the University of Northumbria, took delivery of a test parcel on our behalf. 'The only post I've had since starting university in September has been bills. The hamper really cheered me up' she said.

'The pasta cooked in minutes and so did the sauce, which was very handy. Sometimes I only have 30 minutes between lectures to grab something to eat, so it usually turns out to be a Pot Noodle or a fish finger sandwich, I'm ashamed to say'.

'It also contained treats like flapjacks, biscuits, marmalade, organic chocolate and a sponge pudding - things I wouldn't buy because I don't have the money to spare. I was a bit foxed by a tin of Uncle Joe's Mintballs, they seemed a bit old-fashioned, but I've put them in a dish and everyone says they remind them of home!'

Once you start fading away from lack of vitamins, persuade your parents to come to the rescue and send an emergency food parcel full of treats to see you through the dark days of the winter term.

Hamper companies dedicated to students are thriving. Hugh Band, founder of studenthampers.com explains the appeal of hampers: "It helps people to think they're not forgotten and lets parents, grandmas and aunts and uncles feel they're looking after their students.

Parents don't particularly want to send money for students to go down to the pub but they do want to say we are missing you, you're cared about, we love you, here's some nice goodies for you to enjoy'."

Goodies in the deluxe hamper include chocolates, biscuits, coffee and handmade marmalade for £59.95 and there is even an 'exam hamper' complete with timetable and revision cards for £44.90.
